Case Study: The Purchase Power of Instagram

We recently did some market research over on our IG on the influence social media has on purchase making decisions & what you like (and don’t like) to see on a brand’s feed. Here are the results…

First up, we asked you - do you browse a brand’s feed before purchase?

90% of our respondents said always (147 of you!), with 10% saying that checking in with a feed isn’t important to them before purchase.

To be honest - this isn’t a big surprise to us. We know for a fact that Instagram acts as your portfolio or showcase of work, and in 2022, is an easy way for consumers to get a feel for the brand, know what you offer and begin that B2C relationship.

We then asked, does a brands feed influence your purchase making decision? And here is the result…


We asked in a poll, what is your biggest turn off, 53% of respondents said that poor overall aesthetics was a turn off for them, 33% said a messy feed or no cohesive vision and 14% said inconsistent posting. We opened the floor for you to share your other turn offs, this is what you had to say -

  • Lack of UGC (User Generated Content) influences whether I purchase or not

  • I want to see the product in action, on different people not just campaign shots

  • When they don’t reply to comments

  • Too much paid influencer ads or UGC - doesn’t look organic

  • When it doesn’t feel genuine and it’s OTT tacky marketing

  • Inconsistent brand voice, no united vision

In another poll, where we asked when scrolling a brands IG feed, what is most important to you? 57% said aesthetics, 24% said campaign imagery, 19% said inclusivity and 10% said before and afters. We then asked you to share what else you found important, here’s what you had to say -
